The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) has revealed the identities of two soldiers who perished while carrying out a peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon. Both were killed after the vehicle they were escorting in a UNIFIL operation exploded en route.

Head of the TNI Headquarters Information Centre, Major General Aulia Dwi Nasrullah, stated that the two fallen soldiers were Captain (Inf) Zulmi Aditya Iskandar and Sergeant Major Muhammad Nur Ichwan.

According to Aulia, the incident occurred while TNI personnel were escorting a UNIFIL vehicle to a specific assignment point in the mission area. However, midway through the journey, the vehicle exploded, resulting in fatalities.

“An explosion occurred on the vehicle, leading to the soldiers’ deaths,” Aulia said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

In addition to causing deaths, the explosion also injured two other TNI soldiers, namely First Lieutenant (Inf) Sulthan Wirdean Maulana and Private Deni Rianto. Both were reported to have sustained injuries from the incident.

To date, the TNI has not disclosed the detailed cause of the vehicle’s explosion. TNI Headquarters emphasised that it is awaiting the official investigation results from UNIFIL to determine the trigger for the blast in the mission.

Aulia said that UNIFIL is currently conducting an investigation, while the TNI continues to monitor developments and prepare contingency measures in line with the security dynamics in the Lebanon mission area.

This incident adds to the list of TNI soldier casualties in peacekeeping duties in Lebanon. With this latest event, a total of three TNI soldiers have been recorded as having fallen while carrying out humanitarian missions in the country.

Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) Lestari Moerdijat has expressed deep condolences over the deaths of three Indonesian soldiers serving in the UNIFIL mission in southern Lebanon.

Indonesia has called for an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting and urged a swift, comprehensive, and transparent investigation regarding the deaths of its UNIFIL members.

Indonesia and Lebanon have strongly condemned the attack on the UNIFIL peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon that resulted in the deaths of the personnel.

The TNI has confirmed that two UNIFIL PBB peacekeeping mission soldiers were killed in an explosion incident in southern Lebanon, namely Captain Inf Zulmi Aditya Iskandar and Sergeant Major Muhammad Nur Ichwan.

The deaths of the soldiers in this global peacekeeping mission have become a profound sorrow for the TNI ranks, especially the extended family of the Iskandar Muda Regional Military Command.
