Fuel cell company IdaTech announced Wednesday an expanded partnership with technology services company Cascadiant and a deal to ship 108 of its backup power fuel-cell systems to Indonesia.

Bend-based IdaTech, which did $4.5 million in sales last year, specializes in providing hydrogen-powered fuel cells to the telecommunications industry. This new deployment is on the Indonesian island of Sumatra where IdaTech is working with Cascadiant and Hutchison Telecom.

“That’s where our opportunities lie, in places with emerging telecommunications infrastructures and problems with their grid,” said IdaTech CEO Harol Koyama. He said the largest deployment of IdaTech fuel cells is in India with 300 of them in place.

IdaTech customers include five of the top 10 telecommunications companies, Koyama said. IdaTech, which generally replaces diesel generators with emission-free fuel cells for backup power, is expanding its business as the hydrogen-based technology has gained more acceptance around the world.

IdaTech fuel cells provided backup power for the 30-foot tall floating Olympic Rings in Vancouver, B.C., during the Winter Olympics and will power lights this month at the Hannover Fair 2010 in Hannover, Germany.
