IDAI Warns of Microplastic Dangers to Children from the Womb
The Indonesian Paediatric Society (IDAI) has issued a serious warning to parents to heighten vigilance against the risks of microplastic exposure to children. Recent findings indicate that these micro-sized plastic particles have even been detected in newborn babies.
IDAI’s Central Board General Chairman, Dr Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, revealed that microplastics have been found in the meconium, or first stool, of newborn babies. This serves as strong evidence that exposure to microplastics can occur while the baby is still in the womb.
“In the mother’s blood, which has quite high levels of microplastics, it can be transferred through the placenta, then reach the baby and become part of the baby’s meconium,” said Dr Piprim during IDAI’s media briefing at the Balai Budaya, Jakarta, on Monday (6/4).
According to Dr Piprim, scientific evidence shows that microplastics are persistent and cannot be naturally degraded. Once they enter the body or the environment, these particles will remain and potentially disrupt health in the long term.
Therefore, IDAI encourages parents to be more selective and cautious in using everyday items, especially those that come into direct contact with children’s food and drink intake.
Avoid using plastic containers to heat food or drinks. The heating process on plastic materials can increase the chances of microplastic release, which then enters the body.
Although primary data on the dangers of microplastics to babies in Indonesia is still limited, IDAI emphasises that awareness must be built from an early stage. Currently, the professional organisation for paediatricians is conducting in-depth studies to compile official recommendations.
“We are still examining what the recommendations will be. We will convey them once the evidence is sufficient,” added Dr Piprim.
He also advised parents not to stop updating their knowledge on environmental health issues. “As parents, we must not detach ourselves from scientific knowledge,” he concluded.
To date, IDAI continues to gather secondary data and additional scientific evidence to prepare effective prevention and mitigation steps against the microplastic threat to future generations.
