ICRC to hold workshop in Riau

JAKARTA: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
is scheduled to hold a workshop in Pekanbaru, Riau, with the aim
of empowering organizational institutions throughout Sumatra.

"The workshop will be held in February or March," said a staff
member of the Indonesian Red Cross headquarters identified only
as Marlina in Pekanbaru, Riau on Wednesday.

She said that Pekanbaru was chosen as the venue for the
workshop because Sumatra had been prone to natural catastrophes,
such as floods and forest fires, this year.

The Red Cross activities would be carried out not only at the
provincial level, but also in the regencies, especially in
expansion areas, she said.

Marlina explained that the Red Cross was a neutral
organization whose volunteers were committed to helping not just
victims of natural disasters, but also those in strife-torn
