Ibrahim Arief's Sentence in Chromebook Corruption Case Increased to 5 Years
The panel of judges at the DKI Jakarta High Court has increased the sentence for Ibrahim Arief, also known as Ibam, in the corruption case concerning the procurement of Chromebooks and Chrome Device Management (CDM) at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) for the 2019–2022 period. In the appellate ruling, Ibam was sentenced to five years in prison.
This sentence is heavier than the ruling of the Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court, which had previously imposed a four-year prison term. In addition to the custodial sentence, the panel of judges upheld a fine of Rp500 million against the defendant.
“Sentencing the Defendant Ibrahim, also known as Ibam, to imprisonment for 5 (five) years and a fine of Rp500,000,000,” said Presiding Judge Catur Iriantoro while reading the verdict at the DKI Jakarta High Court on Monday (31/8/2026). If the fine is not paid, it may be replaced by 140 days of confinement.
A significant difference in the appellate ruling is the additional penalty of restitution amounting to Rp5 billion. This obligation was not imposed in the first-instance ruling at the Jakarta Corruption Court.
“Ordering the defendant to pay restitution of Rp5,000,000,000 (five billion rupiah),” the judge stated. If the restitution is not paid, Ibam is required to serve an additional four years in prison.
Regarding detention status, the panel of judges ruled that the entire period of city detention already served by Ibrahim Arief shall be deducted from the total sentence imposed. The judge also ordered that the defendant remain under city detention.
Previously, on 12 May 2026, the Jakarta Corruption Court declared Ibam guilty of committing corruption jointly with others. At that time, the judge imposed a sentence of four years in prison and a fine of Rp500 million, with a subsidiary sentence of 120 days of confinement.
The appellate sentence remains far lower than the demand of the public prosecutor. Previously, the prosecutor had requested that Ibrahim Arief be sentenced to a maximum of 15 years in prison for his actions in the laptop procurement project within Kemendikbudristek.
Nadiem Makarim’s legal team emphasised that the ruling against Ibrahim Arief, also known as Ibam, in the alleged Chromebook laptop procurement case is not yet legally binding.
