Management of courts to change

JAKARTA: Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra said on Thursday that management of the country's judicial courts would be under the authority of the Supreme Court in 2003 to avoid duality.

"If the judicial court is placed under the Supreme Court, judiciary issues will no longer be handled by the Ministry of Justice," Yusril said in Bandar Lampung, Lampung, on Thursday evening.

At present, the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights handles administrative and financial matters in the courts, while the Supreme Court takes care of other institutional matters.

Yusril said that the government could not interfere in the judicial court -- comprising the general court, state court and ad hoc human rights court -- as it was an independent body.

"To guarantee no government interference, we need regulations that eliminate the possibility of nepotism," he said. --Antara

VP tells hospitals to serve all

JAKARTA: Vice President Hamzah Haz called on all state-owned general hospitals (RSUDs) across the country to accommodate not only the rich but poor people too.

"The hospitals should not only accommodate rich people," he said when opening a national meeting of RSUDs across the country at Merdeka Selatan Palace on Friday.

The meeting will take place in Denpasar, Bali, from June 23 through June 25. Hamzah made the statement in the light of the autonomy that hospitals now have to manage their own affairs.

Accompanied by Minister of Health Achmad Sujudi, the Vice President added that hospital directors should try hard to improve hospital services in both the medical and administrative fields.

"If domestic hospital services were good, they (rich people) would no longer prefer to have their health checked at hospitals in Singapore, Australia and Japan," he said.

Hamzah added that if the capability of state hospitals in districts were to improve, local residents would no longer need to go to provincial hospitals or even to Jakarta to obtain proper medical treatment. -- Antara
