Jakarta — Vice Chair of the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia (MPR RI) Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono, known as Ibas, has paid tribute to the late sixth Vice President of Indonesia Try Sutrisno, remembering him as an exemplary figure in upholding the nation’s constitutional values.

In a statement issued in Jakarta on Monday, Ibas expressed his condolences over Try Sutrisno’s passing and acknowledged that his dedication to democracy and the nation’s development would be remembered through his service.

“A figure who was not only a national leader but also an example in upholding constitutional values. In every aspect of his service, he always fought for the nation’s constitution for the sake of justice and the prosperity of the people. This dedication became an important foundation in the journey of our democracy and national life,” Ibas stated.

Ibas underscored that as a member of the next generation, he felt a moral responsibility to continue Try Sutrisno’s thinking and service as a statesman, and that he serves as an inspiration for the nation’s children.

“What has been inherited is not merely history, but also the direction and spirit to continue building Indonesia that is stronger, sovereign, and responsive to the people. May the values of that struggle continue to live and inspire us, the younger generation,” he said.

Ibas described Try Sutrisno as a fighter and nationalist who always thought about national progress. His sincerity, courage, and commitment in serving the nation represent an invaluable legacy.

“Indonesia has lost one of its finest sons, but his fighting spirit will continue to live in every step of the nation’s development going forward,” he stated.

Ibas also attended the state funeral ceremony held solemnly at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery (TMP) in Jakarta on Monday. Try Sutrisno’s passing, he said, leaves behind a legacy of exemplary leadership, dedication, and long service to the Indonesian nation.

Ibas emphasised that the fighting spirit and national values inherited by the deceased will continue to serve as inspiration for future generations in building a more just, advanced, and prosperous Indonesia.

Try Sutrisno was a 1959 graduate of the Military Academy and had an extensive track record of service to the state. He served as Chief of Staff of the Army from 1986 to 1988 and as Commander of the Armed Forces from 1988 to 1993, before later serving as Vice President.

A military honour ceremony accompanied his passing, reflecting the highest recognition of his services to the nation and state. His coffin, draped with the Red and White flag, was escorted to the burial site by the Presidential Security Forces before being laid to rest with full military honours.

The funeral ceremony was also attended by President Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia’s sixth President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, tenth and twelfth Vice Presidents Jusuf Kalla, and eleventh Vice President Boediono. Numerous state institution leaders, ministers from the Red and White Cabinet, and thousands of citizens also attended to pay their final respects.
