Ibas: Institutions and students need to synergise to face contemporary legal challenges

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chairman of the MPR RI Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono, alias Ibas, stated that institutions and students need to play roles and synergise in responding to contemporary legal challenges.

According to him, contemporary legal challenges are becoming increasingly complex, including the dynamics of international law, global conflicts, as well as technological developments and digitalisation. He reminded that technological advancements, including artificial intelligence, bring both opportunities and new challenges in legal aspects, such as cybercrime and data protection.

“Those who control data will control the world,” said Ibas in a statement received in Jakarta on Monday.

He stated that parliament has three main functions: legislation, oversight, and budgeting, which are carried out to realise public welfare. However, he acknowledged various challenges faced, from legal complexities and judicial reviews of laws to political pressures and high public expectations.

“We work in dynamics that are not easy, but all of it must still be directed towards the interests of the people,” he said.

For this reason, he stated that synergy between state institutions and the world of education through the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education is important. He also encouraged students not to just be spectators, but to become strategic partners in critically and constructively monitoring public policy.

“Say it’s good if it is good, say no if it’s not, and push for improvements if it indeed needs to be refined,” he said.

He also invited students to become a generation that is intelligent, has character, and possesses a strong sense of love for the homeland. He emphasised that change must start from oneself and the importance of maintaining optimism in building a more advanced and just Indonesia.

“Students are a force, not later, but now,” he said.
