IAKN Kupang Rector Assaulted by Former Rector on Campus Grounds

The Rector of the State Christian Institute (IAKN) Kupang, I Made Suardana, was allegedly assaulted by former IAKN Kupang rector, Harun Natonis. The incident took place in the courtyard of the IAKN Kupang Postgraduate School in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on Monday (31/8/2026) morning.

As a result of the assault, Made had to be rushed to Bhayangkara Hospital (RSB) Kupang for medical treatment. “I was assaulted this morning, after the morning assembly had finished,” said Made from the ICU ward of RSB Kupang.

Made explained that the incident began when, after the morning assembly, Harun suddenly approached him and questioned the handling of a promotion matter which he claimed had not been resolved for around two years.

Responding to the question, Made replied that the matter had been attended to all along. “I answered at the time that if the required decree documents were available, the processing could be carried out immediately,” Made explained.

According to Made, Harun made a statement to him shortly before the assault occurred. “Not long after, Harun Natonis struck me once in the chest,” he said.

Made has reported the assault to the Kupang City Police (Polresta Kupang Kota). He hopes the case will be handled thoroughly. “My chest is still sore at the moment, and the doctor said earlier that I need to be hospitalised,” he said.

Separately, the Head of Criminal Investigation at Polresta Kupang Kota, AKP Jumpatua Simanjorang, confirmed that a report of assault had been received. “Yes, that is correct. The victim filed a police report this afternoon. A report of assault,” said Jumpatua.

He stated that the victim has undergone a post-mortem examination (visum et repertum) at Bhayangkara Hospital. Made and several witnesses will subsequently be questioned.

“The plan is for the victim and witnesses to be summoned to the Criminal Investigation Unit tomorrow to provide statements,” he added.

Jumpatua added that the article under which the suspect is charged could change depending on the results of the post-mortem and the course of the investigation. “For now, the police report cites Article 466 paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code concerning assault,” said Jumpatua.

“We will await the post-mortem results and the course of the investigation. The charge could change depending on the post-mortem results. If the injury is minor, we will apply Article 466 paragraph 1; if the injury is serious, we will apply paragraph 2,” he concluded.
