IAEA Reveals US and Iran to Hold Talks in Pakistan This Weekend
The United States and Iran are scheduled to hold talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, this weekend. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi revealed that the meeting will address a broader scope of issues than just the nuclear programme.
In an interview with the Italian daily Corriere della Sera on Wednesday (25/3), Grossi detailed that the topics will touch on aspects of regional security that have long been flashpoints of conflict.
“This time, the talks will also cover missiles, militias linked to the Islamic Republic, and security guarantees for Iran,” Grossi stated. He also added the possibility of a temporary non-military solution agreement.
Grossi outlined an alternative diplomatic plan using a dual approach as a middle path. First, a temporary halt to uranium enrichment by Iran given the current political, military, and inter-state trust conditions that “are not yet feasible.” Second, a review of the nuclear issue over the next five to ten years.
The escalation in the Middle East reached a boiling point following the joint US and Israel attack on Iran starting from 28 February. The massive attack reportedly killed more than 1,340 people, including Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Tehran retaliated against the aggression by launching waves of drone and missile attacks on Israeli territory, as well as points in Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
This open conflict has triggered casualties, significant infrastructure damage, and serious disruptions to market stability and global flight routes.
Grossi told reporters that the IAEA has received information about the incident from Iran and Russia.
At the same time, he emphasised that Tehran has enriched uranium to 60% purity, a level far exceeding civilian energy needs.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council announced the suspension of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
