IAEA: No Excess Radiation Levels Detected in Countries Neighbouring Iran
Moscow – No elevation in radiation levels has been detected in countries bordering Iran, stated the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi on Monday, amid escalating military tensions in the Middle East region.
“The IAEA’s Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) is operating with a dedicated team that is gathering information and assessing the situation, taking into account communication limitations resulting from the conflict,” Grossi said in his opening statement to the Board of Governors.
He stated that the regional nuclear safety monitoring network has been activated and continues to coordinate with the IAEA.
“Thus far, no elevation of radiation levels above normal background levels has been detected in countries bordering Iran,” he said.
Grossi added that the agency has not yet found any indication of damage to Iranian nuclear facilities, including the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, the Tehran Research Reactor, or other facilities within the nuclear fuel cycle.
The IAEA, he continued, is closely monitoring military operations in Iran and the broader Middle East region due to the potential risks to nuclear safety.
Efforts to contact Iran’s nuclear regulatory authorities through the IEC remain ongoing, though no response has been received to date, Grossi said.
“We hope that this critically important communication channel can be restored promptly,” he said.
