Advertorial for Books Kinokuniya:
Come to Kinokuniya and meet the world's most creative ideas
Located on the 5th floor of Jakarta's premium department
store, Sogo Plaza Senayan, Books Kinokuniya offers much more than
a conventional bookstore.
Its modern design, book display layout and the presence of an
integrated Starbucks Cafe and Chatterbox restaurant make
Kinokuniya a perfect meeting place for people with similar
interests, hobbies or professions.
"We are here not just to sell books but offer a place for
people to seek information and enrich their knowledge. That is
why we welcome intellectuals and professionals who wish to
discuss a certain book, topic or idea here by providing space for
such a purpose," said Kinokuniya's director, Paulus A. Tandagi.
Designed along the lines of Books Kinokuniya's Japan's
principal, the Jakarta Store provides book lovers with a
convenient atmosphere for finding books that suit their needs.
"The lighting and the music are selected in such a way as to
support a reading mood, while book categories are arranged so
that related book categories are displayed near each other,"
Paulus added.
Rarely found in other bookstores, Kinokuniya also provides
seats to enable visitors and buyers to seriously scrutinize books
that prick their interest, or simply to take a rest. For those
wanting to meet colleagues or enjoy some refreshments, there are
two great places close at hand, Starbucks Cafe and Chatterbox.
In addition, the Sony Center and Apple Center corners
strengthen Kinokuniya's concept as a place where its loyal
customers can obtain information on the latest lifestyle
products.
In line with this emphasis on lifestyle, Kinokuniya also
offers various lifestyle magazines and unique gifts, including
Japanese handicrafts. Various imported comics in Japanese and
Mandarin support this lifestyle concept.
"Most of the books here, about 95 percent, are imported, of
which 60 percent are in English, 25 percent in Japanese, and the
rest in Mandarin or Indonesian, plus stationery," said Paulus.
With the bookstore extending to 1,800 square meters with
around 300,000 book titles and 1 million of copies available,
Jakarta's Kinokuniya is a favorite place for lovers of high
quality imported books.
Almost all important subject categories, including occult,
gardening, management, marketing, philosophy, religion,
aerospace, automotive, information technology, and school text
books, are displayed neatly in stylish racks.
The good relationship between the Japan-based Kinokuniya and
respected book publishers worldwide has ensured the availability
of newly published quality books covering various subjects in
Jakarta's Kinokuniya.
Between 20 and 30 new titles, mostly from abroad, arrive every
week at Kinokuniya to satisfy the demand of the local community
for new books. Such a large number of new arrivals allows
Kinokuniya's customers and visitors to keep themselves well-
informed about newly published books.
The popularity of the Kinokuniya bookstore enabled the firm to
open another outlet after only a year in operation in Jakarta.
This new store is located in the Pondok Indah Mall II and covers
500 square meters.
The presence of a book store offering newly published imported
books covering such a wide range of subjects has made Kinokuniya
a magnet that has attracts people of all ages and professions.
Rather than going abroad to hunt for quality books, Jakartans
can simply find the books they are interested in near their own
homes. For those who do not live in Jakarta, Kinokuniya provides
a delivery service.
"Many people who reside outside Jakarta take advantage of this
home delivery service. We do not mark up the price of the book
but simply add on the additional delivery cost," said Paulus.
Following the latest trends in the world of IT, Kinokuniya is
also planning to provide an online buying facility in the future.
Once this facility becomes available, buyers can select and
purchase books with one click on the mouse.
Open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Kinokuniya also plans to
start stocking Korean lifestyle magazines and books in July.
Paulus considers the Korean community as a very prospective
market due to its rapid growth.
"We cannot ignore the growing size of the Korean community
here as it is rapidly catching up on the Japanese community in
size terms. We will be providing Korean books later. But, as a
starting point, we will offer Korean lifestyle products first,"
Paulus said.
A competitive pricing strategy has made the price of books at
Kinokuniya very reasonable. As it offers such competitive prices,
Kinokuniya does not feel the need to frequently offer discount
programs. However, to mark its one-year anniversary in Jakarta,
Kinokuniya offered a rare 20 percent discount for two days --
June 18 and 19, 2005.
Focusing on its role in supplying newly published books to
Indonesian market, Kinokuniya has not only benefited from the
improving economy but also indirectly contributes to the
country's development through spreading new ideas through high
quality books.
While Kinokuniya's contribution to employment is
significant and measurable, the bookstore's contribution in
providing a means for exchanging ideas is inestimable in
financial terms.
"We have also forged cooperation with some schools in Jakarta.
That is why groups of students and their teachers sometimes visit
our store for educational purposes," said Paulus.
Kinokuniya is truly more than just a bookstore. It is a
meeting place for people with similar interests, a place for
exchanging ideas, and a place for learning, and for nurturing
one's hobbies and career.
Under the guidance of Japan's Kinokuniya, which has 70 years
of experience in the book business, Books Kinokuniya Jakarta
is gradually improving its services and contribution to the people of
Jakarta and, hopefully, of other big cities. Come to Kinokuniya
and meet the world's most creative ideas.
