Hyundai to develop next-generation autonomous driving system

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Hyundai is set to develop a next-generation autonomous driving system supported by technology from Nvidia.

As reported by Carscoops on Wednesday (16/9), Hyundai executive Park Min-win stated that the next-generation autonomous driving system will utilise technology co-designed with Nvidia. Data from Nvidia’s technology will be used to train and refine Hyundai’s Atria software platform.

However, Hyundai will not hand over full control to Nvidia, nor will it rely solely on off-the-shelf software and hardware for the development of its new autonomous driving system. “Our partnership with Nvidia does not mean we are leaving our fate entirely in their hands,” said Park Min-win.

Hyundai’s next-generation autonomous driving system will utilise Nvidia’s Hyperion 10 platform and rely on cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radar. In the future, advanced LiDAR sensors may be added to the system to enable more advanced Level 3 autonomous driving functions, which include features allowing hands-free driving under certain conditions.

Production of vehicle models supported by the Level 2++ system is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2028. The South Korean automaker’s Atria autonomous driving system may begin production as a Level 2++ system in the second half of 2029.

Hyundai will leverage data from its global fleet, including Kia and Genesis branded vehicles, to train the autonomous driving system. Although it has previously lagged in the development of autonomous driving systems, Hyundai aims to surpass its competitors in terms of driving data accumulation by 2033, with an annual global production volume of over 7 million new vehicles.
