Hyundai Prepares Ioniq V to Counter Dominance of Chinese Electric Cars

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Hyundai Ioniq V is beginning to reveal its official form ahead of its launch in the Chinese market. Hyundai’s latest electric sedan appeared in regulatory documents from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Previously, the Ioniq V had already made its global debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2026. This model is part of Hyundai’s new strategy that focuses more on developing electric vehicles specifically for the Chinese market. In terms of appearance, the Ioniq V features a fastback sedan design in a coupe style. Its shape is made lower and sportier, differing from the current popular trend of boxy electric SUVs in China. Beijing Hyundai states that this car was designed directly by Hyundai’s design team in China to suit the character and tastes of local consumers. In terms of dimensions, the Ioniq V has a length of 4,900 mm, width of 1,890 mm, height of 1,470 mm, and wheelbase of 2,900 mm. This electric sedan is built using Hyundai’s E-GMP platform and will be available in two technology options: Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) and Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). The Ioniq V also supports 800V fast-charging technology and uses a high-efficiency electric motor system. Additionally, Hyundai is partnering with several technology companies to support this vehicle’s features, from Qualcomm, CATL, Momenta, Baidu Wenxin Large Language Models, to Volcano Engine. Inside, Hyundai has previously revealed that the Ioniq V will be equipped with a 27-inch ultra-thin 4K resolution screen, ambient lighting, and a head-up display called Cyber Eye. For its digital system, this sedan is expected to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip combined with dual AI large models. The Ioniq V will also be equipped with Level 2+ driving assistance features based on the Momenta system. Hyundai Motor CEO, Jose Munoz, previously stated that Hyundai will launch 20 new models in China over the next five years. These models will include electric vehicles, EREV, hybrids, and petrol-engine cars. Based on data from China EV DataTracker, Hyundai’s sales in China in March 2026 were recorded at 8,909 units, down 17.6% from the same period last year. Hyundai’s market share during that period was 0.5%.
