Hybrid Maize Brings Prosperity to Farmers in West Bandung

Maize plants stretch across Kanangasari Village, Cikalongwetan, West Bandung Regency, West Java. The expanse of hybrid maize, planted on previously idle land, has become a new source of livelihood for farmers in the area.

Among them is Ita Sumitra, 60, who has been a farmer for decades. Her income was previously uncertain, often only enough for daily meals. However, over the past four months, her fortunes have changed. Unused land that once only grew unproductive hardy plants has now been transformed into fertile maize fields, thanks to an initiative by the Cimahi Police.

"Before this, I did odd jobs, anything as long as it was lawful. So before joining the farming programme, we were given training first. Honestly, this was the first time I have planted maize like this," Ita said on Thursday (11/6/2026).

Ita is not alone. She is one of many local residents now placing their hopes in this national food security programme. Behind the millions of maize stalks beginning to yellow lies the sweat and dreams of farmers wanting to improve their families’ economic standing.

"Alhamdulillah, the harvest has come. I am very happy to be involved in maize farming here," she said.
