Hybrid Cars Gaining Strong Momentum in Indonesia, Here's Why
Jakarta — The trend of vehicle electrification in Indonesia continues to accelerate. However, among the various technology types available, hybrid vehicles are regarded as the most sought after by consumers.
Putu Juli Ardika, Chairman of Gaikindo (the Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers Association), stated that whilst electric vehicles have indeed shown fairly rapid growth in recent years, hybrid vehicles are considered easier to adopt from a user convenience perspective.
“Electric vehicle growth is indeed strong. Their market share is already quite substantial at around 14 percent,” Putu said at the Ministry of Industry on Friday (13 March 2026).
One of the primary reasons for increased interest in hybrid vehicles is that they do not require specialised charging infrastructure like pure electric vehicles. Consumers can continue to use existing fuel networks without having to rely on electric charging stations.
“Hybrids are more readily accepted because they don’t require additional infrastructure. These vehicles still use fuel but are far more efficient,” he explained.
Additionally, hybrid technology offers significantly higher fuel efficiency compared to conventional vehicles. Several models are capable of achieving extremely economical fuel consumption.
“Hybrid vehicle fuel efficiency is very high. Fuel consumption can exceed 20 kilometres per litre,” he said.
Developments in vehicle technology have also made consumers increasingly interested in trying various automotive innovations. The current generation of consumers is described as more open to new technology compared to previous generations.
“Today’s generation is different. Many people want to try new technology and see for themselves which vehicle is most suitable for them,” said Putu.
