Hutchinson Launches 3G Service
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: PT Hutchinson CP Telecom Indonesia launched third generation-based (3G) cellular telecommunication service yesterday (29/3). In the first stage, the service called '3' will be available commercially in 67 cities in Java.
Hutchinson Telecommunication International Ltd.'s Chief Executive Officer, Dennis Lui, explained that this service will be available in Bali in June this year. Following on to Sumatra in 2007 and Kalimantan also Sulawesi in the end of 2008.
“Especially in Java, the range is 75 percent,” said Dennis during '3’s' launching in Jakarta yesterday.
In terms of capital expenditure, more than US$1 billion (around Rp9 trillion) is expended until next year. In the meantime, the customer target is one million until the end of this year.
Hutchinson CP Telecom Indonesia's President Director, Rajiv Sawhnet, said the '3' product will be sold via more than 50,000 retail shops in Java. “3G service in the first stage will be available in Jakarta,” he said.
He also explained that the sluggish Hutchinson's launch in Indonesia is due to regulations. “So it's difficult to expand the network,” he said.
Hutchinson is one of five operators which obtained the 3G license from the government. The other companies that have also obtained licenses and launched their service are PT Telekomunikasi Selular, PT Indonesian Satellite Corporation, PT Excelcomindo Pratama and PT Natrindo Telepon Seluler.
