Husein Sastranegara Airport to Be Reactivated Soon, Bandung Mayor Confident It Will Drive Economic Growth
Good news has arrived for Bandung and surrounding residents. Husein Sastranegara Airport is set to be reactivated following instructions from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to reopen the facility. Bandung City Government has welcomed the move, confident the airport will once again serve as a key driver of regional economic growth. Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan revealed he received the reactivation news following the President’s visit to the city on 25 May 2026. “After the President’s visit to Bandung, I received word that day that he instructed the reactivation of Husein Airport alongside Adi Sucipto Airport,” Farhan stated at Bandung City Hall on Wednesday (27 May 2026). Farhan explained that Husein Airport has continued operations, but commercial flights are restricted to scheduled propeller aircraft serving intercity routes within Java. The reactivation aims to restore the airport’s full functionality, including expanding domestic and international flight options. Bandung City Government has high hopes for the airport’s revival. Farhan recalled that prior to operational restrictions, the airport handled substantial passenger numbers. In 2019, Husein Airport served approximately 3.8 million passengers, of which 3 million were domestic and 800,000 international. “We aim to restore Husein Airport’s former glory and boost Bandung’s economic growth,” he said. To support the reactivation plan, Bandung City Government will improve supporting infrastructure, particularly transport access to the airport. Key priorities include upgrading entry and exit routes to Husein Airport, including access from the Pasteur Toll Road via PT Dirgantara Indonesia and the Indonesian Air Force complex. These improvements are expected to enhance mobility for residents across Bandung, from both western and eastern parts of the city, to reach the airport.
