Husein Sastranegara Airport Remains Non-Operational Due to Volcanic Ash
Husein Sastranegara Airport remains non-operational following its closure on Sunday (6/9) due to volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau (GAK).
The Bandung City Government (Pemkot) said that not a single aircraft had operated from or to Husein Sastranegara Airport as of Monday (7/9).
“Flights, as of today, Monday 7 September at 11 o’clock, have not resumed at all,” said Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan during an inspection at Husein Sastranegara Airport, Bandung, West Java, on Monday.
Farhan explained that although the volcanic ash cloud is no longer visible at ground level, the potential danger in the air remains high. The authorities suspect that ash material from the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption is still floating in Bandung’s airspace.
“Even though there is no volcanic ash on the surface, judging by the sky, which still looks grey, it appears to still be there in the air. So there are no flights yet,” Farhan said.
Several affected flight routes include those to and from Denpasar, Balikpapan and Surabaya.
Farhan said he could not yet confirm when flight activity at Husein Airport would return to normal. Nevertheless, the airlines are confirmed to have prepared resolution options for prospective passengers.
“It cannot yet be confirmed, but the airlines have already provided special services to prospective passengers who wish to reschedule or obtain a refund for their tickets,” he said.
