Husband in South Sumatra Strangles Wife to Death Over WhatsApp Status

As reported by detikSumbagsel on Sunday (17/5/2026), the incident took place at their home in Gang Cempaka, Nendagung Village, South Pagar Alam District, Pagar Alam City, on Thursday afternoon.

Pagar Alam Police Chief AKBP Januar Kencana Setia Persada stated that the incident began with a domestic dispute triggered by a social media post. The perpetrator is suspected of being offended by the victim’s WhatsApp status, which he perceived as critical, leading to an argument at home.

“The perpetrator initially asked the victim about the meaning of the post. The conversation then escalated into an argument that ultimately led to physical violence,” Januar said in a statement on Friday (15/5).

After the incident, the perpetrator contacted the local community leader to report the victim’s condition. This information was then relayed to the police.

“Upon receiving the report from residents, Pagar Alam Police personnel immediately went to the scene to conduct an investigation and secure the perpetrator without resistance in order to prevent potential security disturbances in the surrounding area,” he said.

Januar stated that preliminary examination of the victim suggests she died by being strangled with her hands until she lost consciousness and eventually died at the scene.
