Jakarta - Police have revealed that a husband and wife arrested for motorcycle theft in the Duren Sawit area of East Jakarta are repeat offenders who resumed their criminal activity just one month after being released from prison. “They are recidivists in a similar case. Based on their confession, they have committed motorcycle theft twice, and they had only been out of prison for a month,” said Duren Sawit Police Chief Kompol Sutikno at the Duren Sawit Police Station, East Jakarta, on Tuesday. Sutikno added that one of them had previously been processed by the Metro Jaya Regional Police and sentenced to approximately two years in prison. “The first case was likely handled by the Metro Jaya Regional Police, resulting in a sentence of about two years. So when they were released, we conducted another investigation and found they committed the same crime in the Duren Sawit jurisdiction, which is why we are processing them. That makes two times,” Sutikno explained. The case came to light following a report of a Honda Beat motorcycle theft in the parking area of a minimarket on Jalan Dermaga, Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, in August 2024. Police then conducted an investigation and analysed the CCTV footage from the scene. The two perpetrators were apprehended near the Cipinang Indah area. The suspects, PF and MK, used a special tool in the form of a letter T key to carry out their actions. The tool was used to damage the vehicle’s locking system, making it easier for the perpetrators to steal the targeted motorcycle. In addition, they employed the tactic of bringing a child along during the theft to reduce suspicion from residents in the vicinity. For their actions, PF and MK are charged with aggravated theft as stipulated in Article 47 of the Criminal Code. Both face a maximum prison sentence of up to seven years.
