Chairman of the Sumatra Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Acceleration Task Force (Satgas PRR), Muhammad Tito Karnavian, stated that accelerating huntap construction is crucial to provide certainty for affected communities, particularly those who lost or severely damaged homes, enabling them to rebuild their lives.

He emphasised that huntap construction is a key focus in the government’s ongoing Master Plan for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (Renduk).

“In 2026, priority matters such as huntap construction must be prioritised to ensure survivors do not stay too long in temporary shelters (huntara). If they remain in huntara for longer periods without huntap being built, it will create uncertainty for communities whose homes were lost or severely damaged,” Tito said in a press release on Sunday, 24 May 2026.

Tito made the remarks while chairing a cross-ministerial and local government coordination meeting in Jakarta on Thursday, 21 May.

According to Tito, affected communities need certainty to return to permanent housing. Although huntara helps meet urgent needs during the initial disaster response phase, the government aims to ensure survivors do not remain in temporary shelters for extended periods.

As of 24 May 2026, Satgas PRR data shows ongoing huntap construction in the three affected provinces. Of the total planned 39,335 units, 1,110 are currently under construction and 364 have been completed. This represents an increase from 11 May 2026 data, which recorded 357 completed units.

Aceh has the highest huntap requirement at 28,910 units, with 758 currently under construction and 115 completed.

In North Sumatra, 7,601 huntap units are needed, with 297 under construction and 227 completed. West Sumatra requires 2,824 units, of which 55 are under construction and 22 completed as of 24 May 2026.

Huntap construction involves multiple stakeholders, including the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Ministry of Housing and Settlement (PKP), Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs (Kemenko Polkam), National Police (Polri), and various community institutions.

Previously, Satgas PRR spokesperson Amran stated that huntap construction takes longer than temporary housing (huntara) because the government aims to ensure sustainable quality.

“Given that huntap is permanent housing, it requires a longer process to guarantee quality and cannot be rushed to completion in the near term, unlike huntara,” Amran said in Jakarta on Wednesday, 6 May.
