Hunger striker and friends intimidated at Komnas HAM
JAKARTA (JP): Entering their sixth day of hunger strike at the National Commission of Human Rights (Komnas HAM) compound, one of the six striking students and several fellow activists have complained of being intimidated.
Mona, the only female striker, said a man claiming to be her father repeatedly called her boardinghouse earlier in the day asking the boardinghouse owner to tell her to stop her strike.
"When I checked with my parents in Sumatra, they said they had not called me and even encouraged me to continue with my action," she told The Jakarta Post.
In addition, several tough-looking men also visited her boardinghouse, which is located behind her university, National University (Unas), in Pejaten area of Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta.
"The men demanded that the boardinghouse owner and other tenants to force me out," she said.
Meanwhile, City Forum (Forkot) spokesman Mustar Bona Ventura said on Thursday that activist Hendra, 21, a student from the Indonesian Administration Foundation (YAI) who is, with other Forkot activists, watching over the six striking students, was allegedly poisoned by a man at a food stall near the Komnas HAM office.
"Hendra had gone to the food stall, just after midnight, where he met a man, who after chatting with him, offered him a pie. However, minutes after eating the pie, Hendra felt queasy and vomited, and on his way back to his striking friends, he collapsed in front of the Komnas Ham office gate," Mustar said.
Hendra was rushed to Agung Hospital in Manggarai where doctors found signs of poisoning but was unable to identify the toxin. Hendra has been transferred to Carolus Hospital's emergency unit in Central Jakarta.
Mustar added that Hendra was discharged from Carolus Hospital on Thursday morning.
Andi Mayer, the striker who was rushed to hospital on Tuesday evening due to his deteriorating health, resumed his hunger strike on Wednesday evening.
However, early Thursday morning he fainted and was rushed to Indonesian Christian University (UKI) Hospital in East Jakarta. Andi is a student of Sahid University.
The other four striking students are Rey from UKI, Dedi from the State Academy of Islamic Studies (IAIN) Jakarta, Ardi from the Jakarta Institute of Theology (STTJ) and Buyung from the Alliance of Students and Youth.
They vowed to continue their strike until the city police released their friends Mixil Mina Munir and Haris as well as a driver, Miftahudin, who were detained for protesting against the fuel price increase. (01)
