Istanbul (ANTARA) - Hungary’s incoming Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, stated that he will focus on cooperation with the European Union (EU) while prioritising national interests. “We will discuss with the European Union, but we will not go there to wage war,” Magyar said during a press conference on Monday (13/4). He said Hungary will remain committed to the EU and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), which he called the main guarantees of peace. Magyar also signalled a pragmatic foreign policy, describing Israel as an important economic partner and their relationship as “special”. He said relations with Germany will be strengthened, highlighting the importance of German investment, and added that Hungary will maintain pragmatic relations with Russia while prioritising security and energy diversification. Regarding economic policy, Magyar said the government will ensure “fair competition” for foreign investors while supporting domestic businesses. He said Hungary will restart the accession process to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office and review secret documents. “Hungary and the Hungarian people have made history in this decisive election,” said Magyar. Describing his election result as a turning point for the country, he added that the Tisza Party has received a strong mandate. Magyar outlined plans to restructure ministries with a more specialised cabinet, including separate portfolios for health, education, and the environment. The government will also accommodate public aspirations on important decisions and expand consultation mechanisms, he said. Magyar emphasised that anti-corruption measures and financial oversight reforms will be the government’s top priorities. He announced plans to establish an anti-corruption office to monitor the public sector and protect public funds. Meanwhile, he said, the National Asset Recovery and Protection Office will review major public contracts and cases of wealth accumulation related to the state. “For the benefit of everyone, this office must be established as soon as possible,” said the 45-year-old man.
