Hungary Heats Up After New PM Ousts Trump's Ally, President Urged to Resign
Hungary’s new Prime Minister, Peter Magyar, has urged President Tamas Sulyok to resign. Peter stated that his side is prepared to pass legislation if Tamas Sulyok refuses to step down.
Magyar himself won decisively in the election, defeating the nationalist figure Viktor Orban, who had been in power for 16 years. Peter conveyed this demand to Sulyok ahead of the convening of the new parliament, expected to begin in early May.
“I reiterate to him that in my eyes and in the eyes of the Hungarian people, he is not worthy to be the symbol of Hungarian national unity and is unable to guarantee respect for the law,” Magyar said, as reported by AFP news agency on Thursday (16/4/2026).
Magyar added that if the president refuses to resign, his government will introduce legislation to remove him along with others. He mentioned positions including the Attorney General and the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, who were appointed by Orban, and called for their resignation as well.
“All the puppets appointed by the Orban system to hold high positions,” he said.
He noted that the president, elected by parliament, responded to the demands with an answer that was ‘full of riddles’.
Magyar, whose Tisza party won a two-thirds majority in the legislature during the election, giving it the power to amend the constitution. He said the new Hungarian parliament is likely to convene around 6-7 May. He stated that he has urged Sulyok to set a resignation date as soon as possible.
Orban, an ally of US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, lost the election after 16 years in power. Trump had previously vocally supported Orban, but some time ago he stated that he likes Magyar.
“I think this new guy will do a good job—he’s a good person,” Trump said to ABC News.
