Hundreds of workers laid off in Pekalongan

PEKALONGAN, Central Java: Several garment and fishery companies in Pekalongan laid off hundreds of their workers recently due to slow business, an official with Pekalongan mayoralty administration has said.

"The workers were laid off in order to prevent those companies from bankruptcy," said Sofyan Adnan, the head of Pekalongan Manpower Office, on Monday.

Among the garment companies that dismissed their workers were PT Varistek, PT Tekstil Sentra Umum and PT Lojitek. They have dismissed 40, 14 and 53 workers respectively.

Meanwhile, fishery companies PT Tirta Raya Mina and PT Maya Food have laid off 30 and 51 workers respectively.

Adnan expected that the companies would pay the worker's the severance payments that they were entitled to.

Pekalongan, a city located in Java's northern coastal area, has been a prominent center for garment production and fisheries in the country. -- Antara
