Hundreds of thousands of compost bags targeted to manage 60% of Badung's organic waste
The Badung Regency Department of Environment and Hygiene (DLHK) has intensified the distribution of compost bags to all households as an upstream step in waste management. The distribution of self-managed processing tools is targeted to reduce the volume of organic waste sent to final disposal sites by up to 60 percent.
“Currently in Badung, all households have received compost bags. Based on our monitoring, about 60 to 70 percent of waste is organic; if that is successfully separated, there would be a reduction of around 60 percent,” said Made Rai Warastuthi, Head of the Badung DLHK, on Tuesday (19 May 2026).
The step of distributing compost bags is based on the Badung Population and Civil Registry Office (Disdukcapil) data to ensure it reaches every household. However, the local government acknowledges the facility currently only targets residents officially registered in civil records.
“Those who have been served include households; all households in Badung Regency are based on data from Disdukcapil. So there may be some who are not yet reached — new residents or those who are not registered as households in Badung — who have not yet received assistance,” Warastuthi said.
Although distribution does not yet cover non-permanent residents, DLHK Badung notes there are around 141,000 to 142,000 compost bag units that have been distributed across all districts. The programme is expected to be a key driver for households in reducing daily waste generation at the domestic level.
“The number of compost bags distributed is almost 142,000 for the entire Badung. All subdistricts have already received them,” he concluded.
