Hundreds of Taman Puring Traders Demand Certainty Over Market Revitalisation
The coordinator of traders at Taman Puring, South Jakarta, is calling on the Jakarta Provincial Government to honour its promise to immediately revitalise the market. The demand comes exactly one year after the area was ravaged by a major fire in July 2025.
Asmun, the coordinator of the Taman Puring stall traders, stated that the vendors are still holding firmly to the Governor’s commitment to rebuild the market as it was. However, to date, no clarity regarding the revitalisation project has been received by the traders.
‘We are still waiting and hoping for the Governor’s promise to rebuild the market, as per his initial statement,’ Asmun said, as reported by Antara on Tuesday (4/8).
Traders’ concerns have escalated after several Regional Apparatus Organisations from the Jakarta Provincial Government conducted a site inspection. Rather than bringing news about the market’s reconstruction, the inspection was instead related to plans to build a Disability-Friendly Park in the area.
Asmun mentioned that the emergence of the park development discourse has left traders confused. ‘After we lost everything in the fire, suddenly there was another statement besides rebuilding the market, especially about building a park. Our hope remains to wait for the Governor’s promise,’ he stressed.
The economic condition of the traders is reported to be increasingly dire. Currently, only around 180 to 200 traders remain active at the fire site. Before the incident on 28 July 2025, Taman Puring Market was home to more than 500 traders.
A sharp decline in income is the main reason many traders have chosen to leave. Currently, the average daily income of the remaining traders is only around Rp200,000, with highly uncertain conditions. This figure has plummeted compared to their earnings before the fire.
The traders hope the Jakarta Provincial Government will immediately open a direct dialogue to provide certainty about their fate. For them, Taman Puring Market is not just a place of business, but a vital part of the economic lifeblood of Jakarta.
