Hundreds of Students from Various Regions Discuss Global Issues at AYIMUN Depok
A total of 315 school and university students from 118 schools and higher education institutions across various regions in Indonesia took part in the Asia Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) Depok Chapter on 1-2 August 2026. The conference served as a forum for participants to discuss issues ranging from education and digital security to cybercrime through simulated United Nations (UN) sessions.
Participants came from primary, junior secondary, senior secondary, and tertiary education levels in Jabodetabek, Sukabumi, South Sumatra, Magelang, Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Surabaya, and Bali. The event was organised by the International Global Network (IGN) in cooperation with the Al Haraki Integrated Islamic School (SIT) in Depok.
Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti, who opened the event, said that conferences of this kind can serve as a means for students to develop various skills needed in the future, such as critical thinking, negotiation, problem-solving, adaptability, and collaboration.
“Success is determined not only by hard skills but also by soft skills. Make AYIMUN an opportunity to develop your abilities and build aspirations to bring Indonesia’s name to the world stage,” said Abdul Mu’ti.
Deputy Mayor of Depok Chandra Rahmansyah said the simulated international sessions provided space for participants to learn how to convey ideas, respect differing viewpoints, and build consensus through dialogue.
“Through AYIMUN, participants not only learn to be delegates of a country but also develop the leadership skills needed to face global challenges,” he said.
President of the International Global Network Muhammad Fahrizal said the development of digital technology presents new challenges, from the spread of misinformation to the growing threat of cybercrime. Therefore, he said, strengthening critical thinking skills and digital literacy is an important part of building a young generation ready to face change.
“Critical thinking is the strongest firewall we have. Empathy is a defence against hatred in cyberspace, while communication and cooperation are provisions for facing various global challenges,” he said.
Director of Education at SIT Al Haraki Susi P. Krisnawan assessed that collaboration between educational institutions, government, and international partners is needed to expand opportunities for students to participate in global-level forums.
The AYIMUN Depok Chapter conference carried the theme Securing the Digital Future: Protecting Societies and Empowering the Next Generation. Participants were divided into two main councils: UNICEF with the theme Ensuring Quality Education for Every Child for participants aged 11-14, and UNODC with the theme Mitigating the Worst Impacts of Illicit Online Activities: Illegal Gambling and Cybercrime for participants aged 15 and above.
During the conference, participants took part in simulated UN sessions, negotiations, and the drafting of resolutions guided by facilitators from Indonesia, France, and Singapore.
Winners of the conference received scholarships to attend Asia World Model United Nations XV, scheduled to be held at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Centre on 2-5 October 2026.
