Hundreds of students from special education schools (SLB) across Greater Bandung held a Qur’an completion ceremony and broke their fast together during Ramadan at Sentra Wyata Guna on Friday, 13 March 2026. The activity was organised by the Directorate of Islamic Religious Education under the Directorate General of Islamic Education at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag).

Helmi Halimatul Udhma, wife of Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar and adviser to the Ministry’s Dharma Wanita Persatuan, attended the event. She stated that the Qur’an completion ceremony served as an opportunity to foster compassion and strengthen love for the Qur’an.

“Ramadan is a month full of blessings. Activities like this create a space to strengthen love for the Qur’an whilst cultivating compassion for others, particularly for children with special needs,” she said on Friday, 13 March 2026.

She noted that special education students are children who require attention and support from various parties to continue developing. “We all have a responsibility to provide attention, affection, and equal opportunities to them,” she stated.

The Directorate of Islamic Religious Education, she said, is tasked with fostering Islamic religious education at various educational levels, ranging from early childhood education, kindergarten, primary school, junior secondary school, senior secondary school and vocational school. It also develops the strengthening of religious moderation in educational environments.

Helmi also appreciated Islamic religious education teachers working in special education schools. She described them as having an important role and providing mentoring with remarkable patience and dedication.

The Directorate of Islamic Religious Education also partnered with the Indonesian Association for the Blind in Bandung, which during Ramadan held a Vibrant Ramadan programme featuring various competitions, including Qur’an Recitation Refinement, Qur’an Memorisation, and Religious Moderation Knowledge Quiz.

The Directorate of Islamic Religious Education awarded prizes to competition winners.
