Hundreds of sacrificial animals in East Jakarta found ill due to fatigue
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The East Jakarta Food Security, Marine, and Agriculture Sub-Directorate (Sudin KPKP) has found 172 sacrificial animals in poor health, suspected to be due to fatigue during health inspections at various holding and sales locations.
‘Of the 172 animals, 127 were cattle and 45 goats,’ said Theresia Elita, Head of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Health Section at Sudin KPKP East Jakarta, on Tuesday.
The findings were made during health checks ahead of the 1447 Hijriah Eid al-Adha. A total of 19,377 sacrificial animals were inspected at 202 locations from 27 April to 26 May 2026.
‘Of the 19,377 animals inspected, there were 8,136 cattle, one buffalo, 9,341 goats, and 1,901 sheep,’ Theresia said.
She stated that the sick animals were likely fatigued due to long journeys from supply areas to Jakarta.
She explained that fatigue in sacrificial animals often occurs due to lengthy distribution processes and cross-regional travel before arriving at holding or sales locations in East Jakarta.
However, Theresia assured that all suspected sick animals received immediate veterinary treatment on-site.
These efforts aim to ensure the animals recover quickly and meet the required standards for sacrificial use.
‘To prevent any issues, sick sacrificial animals are isolated, given vitamins, and receive health treatments,’ Theresia said.
According to her, the inspections and treatments are part of the local government’s strict oversight to ensure sacrificial animals circulating among the public are healthy, safe, and comply with Islamic law.
She also noted that inspections will continue until Eid al-Adha to ensure no unfit animals are sold to the public.
