Hundreds of Prospective Students Fail to Re-register, UGM Increases Independent Pathway Quota

A total of 138 prospective new students at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) admitted through the National Test-Based Selection (SNBT) pathway did not complete their re-registration. UGM’s Vice-Rector explained that the unfilled SNBT quota would be added to the independent pathway quota. “Seats from SNBP prospective students who do not re-register will be added to the SNBT pathway quota. The unfilled SNBT quota will be added to the independent pathway quota,” explained UGM Vice-Rector for Education and Teaching, Prof Wening Udasmoro, on Monday (29/6/2026). Wening explained that this is in accordance with the provisions of Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Regulation Number 3 of 2026 concerning New Student Admissions for Diploma and Undergraduate Programmes at State Universities. Wening revealed that this year the total number of applicants to UGM reached 143,595 regular applicants and 4,305 International Undergraduate Programme (IUP) applicants. “The total number of new students accepted is 10,411 regular and 1,234 IUP,” said Wening. In detail, the total number of applicants through the Achievement-Based National Selection (SNBP) pathway was 29,456. The total number of new students accepted from the SNBP pathway was 2,836. Meanwhile, prospective new students who withdrew from the SNBP pathway this year amounted to only 0.6% of the total accepted students. “The number of new students who did not re-register in SNBP was 20, a decrease from the previous year,” said Wening. For the National Test-Based Selection (SNBT) pathway, the total number of applicants was 64,473, with a total of 84,637 programme choices. The total number of new students accepted through the SNBT pathway was 2,857. For the independent selection pathway, there were a total of 44,972 applicants. The total number of new students accepted through the independent pathway was 4,480. “(The number of new students who did not re-register) for the SNBT pathway was 138. Currently, the independent pathway is still in the registration process, so the total number of prospective new students who have not re-registered cannot yet be calculated,” Wening stated. “It is not known (the reason why prospective new students did not re-register or withdrew), because they are not required to convey their reasons to the state university,” he added. Regarding prospective new students who withdrew from the SNBP pathway, Wening said there are no sanctions for the schools from which those students originated.
