Independence for NU is an absolute necessity, whether in economic, political, or other aspects.

JAKARTA — Hundreds of young cadres of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) in Batang Regency, Central Java, exchanged aspirations and held discussions at the 2026 Batang Nahdliyin Youth Congress, ahead of NU’s 35th Muktamar in 2026.

“We need to create a healthy dialogue space so that NU members, especially the youth, can openly express their aspirations and views for the organisation’s benefit,” said Candra Yudha Satria, Chair of the Batang Nahdliyin Youth Congress Organising Committee, in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Monday.

Meanwhile, Nauval Fuad Hasyim, the head of Merah Putih Islamic Boarding School, stated that NU currently has a strong foundation as a civil society capable of fostering solid independence. However, he emphasised that NU’s independence remains necessary.

Similarly, Roy Murtadho, head of Misykat Al Anwar Islamic Boarding School, said independence and strengthening as a civil society are essential.

Therefore, he stated that whoever is elected as PBNU General Chairman in the future must be able to maintain and strengthen NU’s position as a religious organisation with social, political, economic, and ecological dimensions.

“NU’s leadership must maximise its civil society function,” he said.

Previously, PBNU Secretary-General Saifullah Yusuf, also known as Gus Ipul, stated that PBNU will hold the 35th NU Muktamar from 1-5 August 2026.

He added that the main agenda of the 35th NU Muktamar is the election of the PBNU General Chairman.
