Hundreds of Mothers Rally at Yogyakarta's Zero Kilometre Point in Support of Free Nutritious Meal Programme

A crowd dominated by housewives and volunteers took to the streets at Yogyakarta’s Zero Kilometre Point to demonstrate their support for the continuation of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) programme. The rally, organised by the Yogyakarta Special Region Volunteer Alliance for the Nation, occurred amidst widespread criticism and calls for an evaluation of the initiative. Participants carried posters expressing their dependence on the scheme, with one reading, ‘If the MBG is dissolved, what will I do for work?’ Field Coordinator Raihan Evan stated that the programme has provided a crucial source of income for many families. ‘All this time, volunteers have earned a living from this programme, and it has supported many families. Some who previously struggled to pay for their children’s education can now afford it. Daily necessities like basic foodstuffs are also greatly assisted,’ he said during the action. The alliance put forward three main demands: the continuation of the MBG programme, firm and impartial legal action against corruptors, and a call for all elements of society to safeguard national unity.
