Amid the challenges of climate change and increasing pressure on urban food systems, building food security is not only about the availability of foodstuffs but also about creating an environment capable of supporting sustainable food production. Driven by this spirit, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government continues to strengthen the development of urban farming as a strategy to build food security while creating a greener, more productive, and sustainable city environment.

Through collaboration between the DKI Jakarta Provincial PKK Mobilisation Team, the Food Security, Marine Affairs and Agriculture (KPKP) Agency, and the Environmental Agency (DLH), the ‘Tanam Raya Bersama Jakarta’ Movement was held again and reached its peak on Friday (19/6). This movement is part of the series leading up to the DKI Jakarta Simultaneous Harvest Festival, involving hundreds of urban farming groups in five administrative city areas.

PT East West Seed Indonesia (Ewindo), commonly known as Cap Panah Merah, again participated by providing superior horticultural seeds, cultivation education, and technical assistance to encourage the community to get closer to the process of producing food independently. This support is provided so that more residents can utilise available land, no matter how small, to become productive family food sources.

Throughout 2026, the Tanam Raya Bersama Movement is being implemented in stages across five administrative city areas with various superior horticultural commodities tailored to the characteristics of each region. South Jakarta initiated planting in February with Labu Madu F1, followed by Central Jakarta with Tomat Martha F1, North Jakarta with Semangka Palguna F1, East Jakarta with Jagung Manis Bonanza MB F1, and West Jakarta on 19 June with Labu Madu F1 and Melon Kuning Alisha F1 as the closing of this year’s Tanam Raya series.

Before planting, participants received education on good cultivation techniques, utilisation of narrow land, and the use of quality seeds. Assistance is then provided periodically until harvest through monitoring in 42 sub-districts to ensure optimal plant growth.

Isak Heryawan, Vice President Director of PT East West Seed Indonesia, stated that Ewindo’s involvement is part of the company’s commitment to supporting various initiatives that encourage the community to get closer to agriculture. ‘We believe that urban food security starts from environmental resilience and community involvement within it. Urban farming is not just about growing food, but also providing access to fresh and healthy food, while building a greener, healthier, and more resilient city in facing the challenges of climate change. Therefore, we appreciate the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government for continuously promoting urban farming as a joint community movement,’ said Isak.

For Jakarta, urban farming is not only a solution to strengthen food security but also part of the effort to build a city more resilient to climate change challenges. Gardens growing in home yards, RPTRA, green alleys, and even building rooftops can add productive green spaces, improve air quality, and shorten food distribution chains.
