Hundreds of Indonesian Umrah Pilgrims Remain Stranded in Qatar and Dubai

The Association of Umrah and Hajj Organisers (Himpuh) has revealed that hundreds of Indonesian pilgrims remain stranded across several transit countries following the closure of air routes due to escalating conflict between Iran and the US-Israel alliance.

Himpuh Chairman Firman Taufik stated that the condition of pilgrims in transit countries requires greater government attention, though he did not specify exact numbers. He noted that stranded pilgrims fall into two categories: those en route to Saudi Arabia for their pilgrimage, and those returning home after completing umrah.

According to Firman, data from Himpuh shows that stranded pilgrims are currently dispersed across three airports: Doha, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. He reported that whilst some pilgrims in Qatar have been provided hotel accommodation through airline facilitation, those awaiting departure remain affected by flight suspensions.

Approximately 800 pilgrims are currently performing umrah in Saudi Arabia, presenting additional concern. Organisers have already prepared facilities and accommodation for these pilgrims, but escalating tensions have forced the postponement of new departures.

Firman appealed to the Indonesian government to take decisive measures to address the situation. He emphasised that mere travel advisories without concrete solutions are insufficient, calling instead for government action to secure pilgrims and mitigate financial losses incurred by delayed departures. He urged the ministry to fulfil its responsibility to protect the interests of pilgrims.

Zaki Zakaria, Head of Umrah Affairs at the Association of Muslim Organisers of Hajj and Umrah for the Republic of Indonesia (Amphuri), declined to disclose precise numbers of stranded pilgrims but acknowledged the impact of airspace closures.

Amphuri has advised all umrah organising committees to develop mitigation strategies and contingency plans in the event of prolonged delays or operational changes affecting pilgrim itineraries. The association has also urged organisers to provide maximum support to pilgrims, including reassurance and clear communication to maintain their sense of security and comfort.

Amphuri stated that it expects all member organisations to take anticipatory and responsive measures to maintain the quality of service and safety of Indonesian umrah pilgrims.
