Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai has asserted that higher education institutions hold a strategic mandate to build a generation that is not only academically excellent but also sensitive to human values, justice, and human dignity. According to Pigai, universities must not merely function as spaces for the transfer of knowledge, but also as places for shaping the character, conscience, and social responsibility of the younger generation. “Universities must produce a generation that is not only intellectually smart, but also possesses a deep sensitivity towards the values of humanity, justice, and the dignity of every person,” Pigai said in a written statement on Tuesday. He made these remarks while delivering a public lecture during a working visit to Artha Wacana Christian University in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, on Monday. The event was coupled with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on strengthening human rights capacity within the higher education environment. He also highlighted various contemporary human rights challenges, from social inequality and digital technology developments to the protection of vulnerable groups, women’s and children’s rights, and environmental issues requiring the active involvement of academics. Pigai added that power only gains moral legitimacy when used to protect and advance human dignity. Therefore, constructive dialogue between the academic world and policymakers is essential to ensure national development aligns with human rights principles. East Nusa Tenggara Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena expressed appreciation for the Ministry of Human Rights’ attention to strengthening the capacity of the younger generation in the province. According to him, the province, which possesses ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity, faces serious challenges in the digital era, including rampant online sexual violence, human trafficking crimes, and the spread of hate speech. “Freedom of expression on social media must be guarded. We may express ourselves, but we are not free to destroy the dignity of others. It is here that the state is present to ensure responsible human rights in this digital ocean era,” Emanuel said. On the same occasion, Artha Wacana University Rector Godlief F. Neonufa stated his campus’s commitment to strengthening its contribution to human rights development in East Nusa Tenggara. In addition to implementing the Three Pillars of Higher Education, the university is also developing a fourth pillar concept through the dimension of Spirituality Based on Imago Dei. As a follow-up to the cooperation, the university expressed its readiness to become a Human Rights Study Centre in East Nusa Tenggara. Meanwhile, Head of the East Nusa Tenggara Regional Office of the Ministry of Human Rights, Oce Yuliana Naomi Boymau, expressed her great hope that this synergy would become the main catalyst for building a human rights culture rooted in local wisdom. She hopes that academic laboratories such as the Human Rights Study Centre at the university will be able to produce progressive public policy recommendations. This synergy is expected not to stop at the ceremonial signing of the MoU, but to continue into concrete actions that provide a safe, equal, and just space for all levels of society in Flobamora. During the visit, the Minister of Human Rights was accompanied by his Special Staff Yosef Sampurna Nggarang and the Head of the East Nusa Tenggara Regional Office along with her staff. The Minister and his entourage were welcomed by the Governor, the Deputy Governor Johni Asadoma, the Rector, the Chairperson of the East Nusa Tenggara Regional House of Representatives Emelia Julia Nomleni, members of the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum, and local government officials.
