Human Rights Group Report: Global Sumud Flotilla Activists Tortured with Electric Shocks in Israeli Detention
The Israeli human rights group Adalah has released a chilling report detailing alleged torture of humanitarian activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla. The activists detained by Israeli authorities are said to have suffered electric shocks, physical violence, and systematic psychological abuse.
Based on testimonies collected by Adalah’s legal team up to Thursday (21 May 2026), at least three activists had to be hospitalised due to serious injuries. Dozens more suffered broken ribs and acute respiratory distress as a result of violence during detention following the interception of vessels in international waters.
Doubts about the policy of torture were reinforced by a video posted by Israel’s National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir. In the video, the activists appear kneeling with their hands cuffed behind their backs and faces to the floor, while the Israeli national anthem is played as a form of humiliation.
Adalah accuses Israeli authorities of deliberately implementing a “criminal policy” intended to degrade human dignity. “Our legal team has found consistent testimony regarding the use of electric shocks as a tactic of intimidation,” reads an official Adalah statement.
The Global Sumud Flotilla departed from Marmaris, Turkey, last week on a humanitarian mission to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza that has persisted since 2007. The convoy involved hundreds of participants from 39 countries.
The incident is not the first for the flotilla. In April, the Israeli military also conducted a similar strike near Crete, Greece. The tight blockade imposed by Israel has left 2.4 million Palestinians in Gaza on the brink of extreme hunger, worsened by a military campaign since October 2023 that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.
The activists are scheduled to face court or relevant authorities on Thursday to review their detention status before deportation procedures take place. As of this report, the Indonesian rupiah has continued to fluctuate in response to geopolitics in the Middle East. (Ant/H-4)
Foreign Minister Sugiono clarified that the status of nine Indonesian nationals detained on the Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0 in Israel is not a kidnapping, but interception of Gaza aid.
Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has posted a video showing how Israel treated Global Sumud Flotilla activists detained during their humanitarian mission toward Gaza. His action has drawn widespread condemnation from many world leaders.
The FPCI has strongly condemned the detention of nine Indonesian nationals in the Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0 mission by the Israeli military and urged their immediate release in accordance with international law.
The United States and Iran have begun exchanging ideas on nuclear programme formulas. Despite progress, the United States and Israel have increased military readiness for a potential conflict.
