Human rights course for judges

JAKARTA: Seventy-five judges and prosecutors are undergoing a human rights course organized by the Ministry of Justice along with the Asia Foundation, as part of preparations of the legal apparatus for human rights tribunals.

Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the six-day course, which began on Monday, was aimed at preparing judges to comprehend fully basic human rights concepts and materials.

"We hope judges will develop compassion in upholding justice in human rights cases," Yusril said, as quoted by Antara.

Indonesian judges are often criticized by the public for their perverse verdicts, which often fail to produce a fair and just trial.--JP
