Jakarta, TopBusiness – Huayou Indonesia continues to strengthen its position as a nickel downstream company focused on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) in Indonesia. During a online presentation for the TOP CSR Awards 2026 jury on Wednesday 20 May 2026, the company outlined various achievements and flagship CSR programs, including carbon emission reductions, local human resources development, and mangrove restoration around the company’s industrial areas. The Huayou Indonesia team attending the jury: Stevanus as Director of Public Affairs, Zhang Xing as Director of ESG and Sustainability Centre, Ma Chengzuo as ESG Supervisor, and Richy Sabila as PR Supervisor. They presented a slide deck titled “Huayou Indonesia: Driving Sustainable Growth Through Green Innovation, Credible ESG Governance, and Inclusive Community Impact.” In introducing the company to the jury, Stevanus stated that Huayou Indonesia is not merely a nickel processing and refining company, but a key part of the global electric vehicle battery supply chain that supports Indonesia’s energy transition. “Huayou Indonesia here is the Huayou group from China, which is establishing processing and refining operations in nickel, primarily as a raw material for electric battery materials that have a special place in our energy transition,” he said. Having started operations in Indonesia in 2018, Huayou Indonesia has continued to expand downstream investments across strategic industrial zones in Sulawesi and North Maluku. By 2025, the company’s total investment in Indonesia had reached US$11 billion with an expected annual export value of US$5 billion. Currently Huayou Indonesia has created around 22,000 local jobs and targets that number to rise to 100,000 in the next five years. The company’s operations are spread across Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP), Indonesia Pomalaa Industry Park (IPIP), Malili, and the Buli industrial area in East Halmahera. PR Supervisor Richy Sabila said that participating in TOP CSR Awards 2026 is an important moment to evaluate and strengthen the company’s CSR and ESG strategy. “This is our first time joining the TOP CSR Awards. We hope the opportunity will not only be a space to present our CSR initiatives but also a chance to learn how we can do better in our CSR strategy,” Richy said. He stressed that since its early presence in Indonesia, Huayou has a mission to develop a low-carbon and responsible nickel downstream industry through integrated ESG practices. “Our mission is clear, namely to develop full-chain nickel processing from laterite ore to low-carbon cathode materials, while building shared prosperity with Indonesian communities through responsible ESG practices,” he said. Richy also outlined the company’s FRIENDS ESG Strategy Model. He said ESG at Huayou is not positioned as an add-on activity but truly integrated into our operations. “At Huayou Indonesia, ESG is not treated as a supporting activity, but truly integrated into our operations,” Richy said. The FRIENDS ESG Strategy comprises seven main pillars: Footprint, Resource, Integrity, Quality, Nurturing, Developing, and Sustainable. The strategy is implemented through the ESG Leadership Group, ESG Center Indonesia, and a KPI-based oversight system and international assessments such as ESIA, AMDAL, and Biodiversity Impact Assessment (BIA). The company also applies a mitigation hierarchy based on the principles of avoid, minimize, restore, and offset in managing the environmental impacts of all operational projects. ESG Supervisor Ma Changzuo added that in May 2025, Huayou Indonesia, together with the UN Global Compact (UNGC) and 18 other institutions, launched the China-Indonesia Community Sustainable Development Action Network focusing on sustainable community development around the company’s industrial areas. Under this network, Huayou runs two main programmes: Migrant Children Education with Save the Children and the Biodiversity Card Games Programme to improve local communities’ understanding of biodiversity around the company’s operating areas. “Our belief is simple: we measure success not only by what we produce but also by what we leave behind,” Ma Changzuo said. Flagship CSR Programme One of Huayou Indonesia’s flagship CSR programmes is Mangrove Restoration & Green Community Development. Launched on International Mangrove Day 2025, it has planted more than 22,000 mangroves in the IPIP, KNI, and Sopura Village areas. The programme uses drone-assisted planting of native species and received recognition as a benchmark Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) overseas ecological practice in June 2025. In addition to environmental restoration, the programme also includes community training on mangrove management and coastal-area-based economic development. “The programme combines ecological restoration with livelihood improvement for local communities,” said Ma Changzuo. In addition, Huayou Indonesia has developed Industry–Academia Collaboration involving 19 educational institutions with seven types of scholarships, internships, and international exchanges. The programme supports more than 500 Indonesian students and is part of the development of national talent in the nickel downstream and electric vehicle battery industry. Huayou Indonesia is recorded as having invested Rp 30.75 billion to support the academic development programme. A number of universities involved include
