Huawei Launches Next-Gen LUTERRA™ Grid-Forming ESS Platform with Five Technological Breakthroughs
At Intersolar Europe 2026 in Munich, Huawei held its FusionSolar Strategy & New Product Launch 2026 under the theme ‘Making the Most of Every Ray’. The company announced the rebranding of its Energy Storage System (ESS) solution from LUNA to LUTERRA and introduced the latest generation Smart String Grid-Forming ESS platform, LUTERRA. This platform supports 1,000 V AC and delivers an optimal array capacity of 12.5 MW/50 MWh.
Steven Zhou, President of the Smart PV & ESS Product Line at Huawei Digital Power, delivered a presentation titled ‘Powering a Grid-Forming & Intelligent Future, Driving Renewables Evolution’. Zhou stated that future PV and ESS products must evolve into assets capable of supporting grid stability. He noted that flexibility to meet future needs, grid-forming features, and intelligent technology will be crucial factors. Huawei continues to develop power electronics and digital technologies, innovating to build industry-leading capabilities in grid-forming technology, artificial intelligence, and safety and reliability throughout the lifecycle. These core capabilities will strengthen Huawei’s Smart PV and ESS solutions across various application scenarios, delivering maximum value for customers and enhancing grid stability with increasing renewable energy penetration.
Steve Zheng, President of the Smart ESS Business at Huawei Digital Power, presented on ‘E-volving for Higher Returns’ and launched the next-generation LUTERRA platform. Zheng explained that Huawei LUTERRA delivers a significant leap in energy density, from a single cabinet to array configuration. The platform offers four main benefits: optimal investment, higher returns, power plant-level grid-forming capability, and C2G safety. This combination makes LUTERRA an ideal choice for customers building ESS for next-generation power systems.
LUTERRA sets a new industry standard through five technological breakthroughs in power electronics and innovative architecture. These include the industry’s first 1,000 Vac smart string architecture, which improves battery consistency, with Huawei’s latest SiC 1,000 Vac module significantly boosting energy conversion efficiency. The industry’s first through-busbar architecture simplifies installation, capacity expansion, and cable connections, accelerating project implementation while saving land use. The industry’s first smart distributed cooling system increases the heat dissipation area by up to 100%, reduces fan speed, and lowers noise levels by approximately 40%. Power plant-level grid-forming features support the synchronisation of tens of millions of devices and automatically adapt to changes in grid strength. Finally, a digital twin platform-based solution with advanced digital and AI technologies enables more accurate State of Energy and State of Power predictions, providing reliable digital support for electricity trading and increasing profits throughout the project lifecycle.
LUTERRA supports the acceleration of the energy transition through four key advantages. Optimal investment and higher returns are achieved through faster implementation and lower costs; for example, construction to commissioning time for a 1 GWh ESS can be shortened by around 30%, while Balance of Plant costs can be reduced by more than 20%. Higher returns are supported by continuous improvements in Round-Trip Efficiency, system availability, battery consistency, and State of Charge accuracy, enabling greater energy throughput over the lifecycle. Power plant-level grid-forming features include six core capabilities: short-circuit handling, wideband oscillation damping, inertia response, primary frequency regulation, black start, and seamless on-grid to off-grid switching, opening opportunities to enhance project profitability. C2G safety technology ensures the grid-forming ESS meets Zone C safety standards, meaning the risk level is less than 1 in 1 million based on R-Map.
Sun Power, President of the Residential ESS Business at Huawei Digital Power, also presented and introduced the latest residential PV and ESS product, LUTERRA S2. Sun stated that innovation never stops and that Huawei’s residential PV and ESS solutions now serve more than 4.3 million families worldwide. With the vision of ‘The Ultimate in Smart Home Energy’, Huawei delivers a new generation of products supported by an increasingly intuitive application experience, leading the development of smart home energy with user convenience, system intelligence, and optimal safety levels.
At the end of the event, Allen Zeng, President of the Technical Service & Operation Department at Huawei Digital Power, launched the Huawei Digital Power service strategy to ensure more predictable returns. Through this strategy, Huawei Digital Power maximises the added value of power plants throughout their lifecycle, supported by 13 years of global service experience. Zeng said that Huawei Digital Power will continue to accompany customers and partners throughout the power plant lifecycle.
