HP Set for Total Transformation as US Giant Prepares Major New Move
OpenAI is reportedly teaming up with Qualcomm and MediaTek to develop special processors for AI-based smartphones. The news immediately rocked the market. Qualcomm’s shares jumped 13% in pre-market trading after analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities revealed the plans. According to Kuo, Qualcomm and MediaTek will be joint development partners for the AI phone being prepared by the maker of ChatGPT. He stated that mass production of the device could begin in 2028. Not only that, China’s Luxshare is said to be the exclusive partner for system design as well as manufacturing the device. Luxshare is known as one of Apple’s suppliers, and Kuo believes the involvement of this company strengthens the signal that OpenAI’s AI device project is increasingly serious. Nevertheless, the related companies have not yet provided official comments on the report. Citing Reuters, OpenAI has long wanted to bring AI devices to consumers. In May last year, the company acquired the startup io Products owned by former Apple designer Jony Ive for $6.5 billion. That move also appointed Ive to lead the development of the new device. However, the device being prepared may not necessarily take the form of a traditional smartphone. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman even called it a new category. He told employees that the device would be the “third core device” besides smartphones and laptops, according to a Wall Street Journal report last year. If OpenAI truly launches a smartphone, the competition will heat up. The company will directly face Apple and Samsung, which currently dominate around 40% of the global smartphone market. This step also reinforces the indication that smartphones will remain the centre of digital life in the AI era. Moreover, Reuters previously reported that Amazon is also preparing a new push to re-enter the smartphone market. Meanwhile, Apple’s shares fell 1.7% amid the news. The iPhone maker also recently appointed long-time hardware chief John Ternus as CEO last week, a signal that physical devices remain a primary focus while Apple pursues AI development.
