How to Upgrade Legacy Identification Documents to QR Code
Identity documents that previously used wet-ink signatures are now available with a QR Code signature feature. These QR Code versions can be verified through the Digital Identity (IKD) application.
Based on information from Dukcapil Jakarta’s Instagram account (@dukcapiljakarta), the following documents are now available in QR Code versions:
Family card (KK)
Birth certificate
Death certificate
Marriage certificate
Divorce certificate
QR Code versions of these documents no longer require wet-seal legalisation as their authenticity can be directly verified through the barcode displayed on the document.
How to Upgrade Legacy Documents to QR Code
Legacy identity documents can be upgraded to QR Code format. Here are several reasons why you should upgrade your legacy identity documents to the QR Code version:
Documents will be equipped with a QR Code for online data verification through the IKD application
Can be printed independently using white A4 80-gram HVS paper sent by Dukcapil via email
Data is directly linked to the Civil Administration Information System (SIAK), making it difficult to forge
Documents do not require legalisation. Simply scan the barcode to verify authenticity
It should be noted that some documents may require archive checking first

Electronic ID (e-KTP)
Family card (KK)

Here is the procedure for submitting an upgrade request for legacy identity documents to QR Code:
- Visit the service counter at Dukcapil offices at the village, district, sub-district, or municipal level
Understanding the 16-Digit NIK
As we know, the NIK consists of 16 unique numeric digits, for example 1234567890123456. According to information from Dukcapil Jakarta, here is what the 16 digits of the ID card NIK mean:
NIK ID Card: 1234567890123456
12: Province code
34: Regency/city code
56: Sub-district code
789012: Date of birth, month of birth, year of birth
3456: Serial number (the sequential number of individuals born on the same date within one sub-district)
Here are some important points to note regarding the NIK digit codes:
Date of birth: Written with two numeric digits, for example if the date of birth is 1, it is written as 01. For females, 40 is added to the date of birth, for example, date 2 is written as 42, date 18 is written as 58
Month of birth is written with two numeric digits
Year of birth is written using the last two digits of the birth year
