A belly that appears to protrude is not always due to fat accumulation. Fitness coach Zoe Modgill reveals that a number of other conditions can cause the belly to look bloated, ranging from bloating, digestive disorders, to pressure on the core muscles. Zoe explained that many people mistake a change in the shape of the abdomen for ordinary belly fat. ‘Not every protruding belly is fat. Sometimes it’s bloating, posture, constipation, core pressure, or diastasis,’ wrote Zoe, citing Hindustan Times, Wednesday (20 May 2026). She also warned that instant solutions such as extreme diets, excessive sit-ups, detox drinks, or random workouts may not be the right answer. She said it is important to understand the body’s needs first, starting with eating patterns, muscle strength, total daily activity, digestive health, and core rehabilitation. How to Differentiate Belly Fat from Digestive Problems Zoe shared a few simple signs to distinguish whether the abdomen has swollen due to fat or bloating. If the belly feels flatter in the morning but enlarges at night, this condition is likely due to bloating or pressure in the abdominal area. Meanwhile, a belly that feels hard and tight after meals could be a sign of a digestive problem. She also mentions that a belly protrudes during exercise may indicate excessive pressure on the core muscles, or core pressure. In women after giving birth, the lower abdomen that still protrudes is not necessarily due to fat. Zoe said this condition could be influenced by the skin, fascia tissue, posture, or a combination of several factors. Don’t Ignore These Signs. In addition, Zoe warned of several conditions that require more serious attention. ‘Bloating that is painful should be checked by a doctor,’ she said. Constipation is also said to make the belly look larger. On the other hand, eating too quickly can worsen bloating. She also highlighted diets low in protein and high in carbohydrates that can increase hunger and the urge to overeat. The public are advised to consult a doctor if they experience certain health concerns.
