How to reduce religious conflict
How to reduce religious conflict
From Suara Pembaruan
Media reports on the closure of places of worship along with
their comments have led to mutual accusation, suspicion,
criticism and threats; creating an atmosphere of imminent
conflict.
In fact, the key to the settlement of such cases is the
revocation of the Joint Decree of three Ministers No. 01/1969 on
special licenses for the construction of worship buildings, and
the revision of Law No.39/1999 on human rights, which contains an
article that guarantees religious freedom, but without the
requirement to respect religious harmony.
The provision in this article fails to specify how the state
should perform its duty to protect the religious freedom of
citizens according to their chosen faith.
In order to put an end to such an unfavorable atmosphere,
legislators and government executives should promptly adopt the
best decision for the sake of peace in Indonesia's pluralist
society.
