How to Properly Install Land Boundary Markers

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Installing land boundary markers must not be done haphazardly. This is because boundary markers serve as physical indicators of land ownership boundaries, reducing the risk of overlapping claims or disputes with neighbouring plots. According to the official website of the Simalungun Land Office under the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning (ATR/BPN), the installation of land boundary markers is regulated. Per the land survey guidelines, land boundary markers must be at least 50 centimetres in total length. The portion buried underground must be firmly installed to prevent displacement or damage. The visible part above ground serves as a clear boundary marker for landowners and surveyors. Land boundary markers can be made from various materials such as concrete, iron pipes, PVC pipes, or wood, provided they are sufficiently durable and weather-resistant. The survey results then become part of the official data recorded in the national land system. Land boundary markers serve several key functions in land administration. “With boundary markers installed, land becomes more secure. Markers prevent disputes and land encroachment by neighbours or others,” said Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/Head of National Land Agency (ATR/BPN) Nusron Wahid, quoted on Saturday, 30 May 2026. Secondly, markers help prevent land disputes and boundary overlaps by clearly defining plot boundaries. Thirdly, existing markers streamline land surveying; surveyors from the Land Office do not need to re-determine plot boundaries during measurements. Fourthly, survey data referencing boundary markers forms the basis for issuing valid land certificates. Regulations on land boundary markers and plot boundaries are stipulated in Minister of Agrarian Affairs/National Land Agency Regulation No. 3 of 1997, implementing Government Regulation No. 24 of 1997 on Land Registration.
