How to Officially Create a Digital Driving Licence (SIM) in Indonesia
Drivers can now utilise the Digital SIM as a companion document to their physical driving licence through the official Digital Korlantas Polri application. The presence of this service makes it easier for the public to store and display their Driving Licence (SIM) data via mobile phone when required. It is important to understand that the Digital SIM is an electronic version of the licence issued through the official Korlantas Polri application. Although digital in form, drivers are still required to possess a legally issued SIM in accordance with regulations. The Digital SIM is not a replacement for the SIM issuance process, but rather a service to facilitate access to SIM data already held. Using the Digital SIM can assist drivers during traffic checks as the licence data can be shown directly through the Digital Korlantas Polri application. However, drivers must still ensure their SIM is valid and comply with all traffic regulations to avoid ticketing sanctions. The first step is to download the Digital Korlantas Polri application via the Google Play Store or App Store. This application is the official platform provided by Korlantas Polri for various traffic services, including the Digital SIM. After the application is installed, register using an active phone number. The user will receive an OTP code for the verification process, then be asked to create a PIN for account security. Next, complete the data by providing the National Identity Number (NIK), full name, and email address. After that, activate the account via the email sent by the system. The next stage is identity verification using the e-KTP through the liveness detection feature available in the application. This process aims to ensure the user’s data matches the registered official identity. If you already possess a valid SIM, enter the SIM menu and synchronise the data according to the instructions. After the verification process is complete, the SIM data will appear in digital form complete with a QR code as proof of the electronic document’s authenticity. Once activation is successful, the Digital SIM can be displayed through the application when needed, for instance during checks by police officers. Users are advised to always ensure the application is accessible and the mobile phone has sufficient battery power. Korlantas Polri explained that the Digital SIM is an electronic service innovation that makes it easier for the public to access their licence documents. Nevertheless, drivers are still required to obtain their SIM through the official procedure, including fulfilling administrative requirements, health checks, psychological tests, and passing the theory and practical exams. For new SIM applications, the public can start the registration process online through the SINAR (SIM Nasional Presisi) service within the Digital Korlantas Polri application. After all requirements are met and the theory exam is completed online, applicants are still required to visit the SIM Administration Unit (Satpas) to take the practical exam before the licence is issued. By utilising the Digital Korlantas Polri service, the public can access their SIM data more practically and efficiently, while still being obliged to hold a valid licence and comply with all traffic regulations to avoid penalties.
