How to Differentiate Between Needs and Wants to Control Spending Amid Economic Challenges
Maintaining financial health amidst economic uncertainty requires high discipline in managing cash flow. One of the primary keys is an individual’s ability to differentiate between urgent needs and momentary wants.
Financial planner from Finante.id, Rista Zwestika CFP, WMI, explained that distinguishing between these two is crucial for maintaining financial security. According to her, there is a simple method one can employ before deciding to spend money as a key component of financial planning.
Rista suggests that the public should ask themselves reflective questions before completing a transaction. “Can I still carry out my daily activities well if I do not buy this item right now?” Rista stated in Jakarta on Monday.
She outlined two main indicators for categorising expenditures. Beyond categorising goods, Rista also emphasised the importance of controlling emotions during shopping. Often, the urge to buy arises from the temptation of discounts or temporary promotions.
To overcome this, she suggests implementing a time delay before executing unplanned purchases. “For example, waiting 24 to 72 hours before buying the item,” she added. Implementing this delay allows an individual to rationally re-evaluate the urgency of the item, thereby preventing impulsive spending triggered by emotions or trending pressures.
The ability to control daily expenditures is becoming increasingly vital, especially during periods of economic downturn. By ensuring every purchase aligns with a scale of priorities, the risk of larger financial problems in the future can be minimised. Rista concluded by reminding that discipline in setting expenditure priorities is the fundamental foundation for building long-term financial resilience.
