Gold investment can now be made through various instruments, not just by purchasing physical gold. One of the newly available instruments in Indonesia is the Gold Exchange Traded Fund (ETF). A gold ETF is a mutual fund traded on the exchange whose value tracks the movement of gold prices or shares of gold mining companies. Through this instrument, investors can gain potential profits from rising gold prices without having to own or store physical gold. In addition to providing access to gold price movements, gold ETFs also offer liquidity as they can be bought and sold during exchange trading hours. Their value generally moves in line with the gold price, so when gold prices strengthen, the value of the gold ETF also tends to rise.

Citing the official Pegadaian website, gold ETFs are generally divided into two main groups with different characteristics. First, physically-backed gold ETFs that directly reflect the gold price because they are supported by physical gold ownership as the underlying asset. In this scheme, the fund manager stores gold bullion as the base asset backing the product. Consequently, the ETF’s performance is closely linked to gold price movements in the market. The second type is ETFs that invest in shares of gold mining companies. The value of this type of ETF is influenced not only by gold price movements but also by the business performance of the companies whose shares are in the portfolio.

Gold ETF investment offers several advantages, including easy and flexible access and price movements that follow the global market. This instrument can also be liquidated quickly, does not require storage costs like physical gold, and can be used as a hedging instrument to preserve asset value. Furthermore, Gold ETFs have obtained sharia principle approval from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), referring to DSN-MUI Fatwa Number 163/DSN-MUI/VIII/2025 concerning Sharia Gold ETFs.

Gold ETFs have been available for purchase since their launch on 10 August 2026. The products are already available on several investment platforms. The issuance of gold ETFs in Indonesia is carried out by five companies: PT Indopremier Investment Management, PT Mandiri Manajemen Investasi, PT BRI Manajemen Investasi, PT Trimegah Asset Management, and Shinhan Asset Management Indonesia. As one of the issuers, Trimegah Asset Management President Director Antony Dirga explained that gold ETFs are traded on the secondary market of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI), making the investment mechanism relatively simple. The gold ETF can be accessed by investors using the trading code XTRA and has been traded on the BEI since launch day. This code serves as the gold ETF ticker that investors can use to conduct transactions on the exchange. “The ticker is XTRA, X-T-R-A, for the gold ETF. So everyone can access it, just like shares traded on the exchange,” Antony said after the launch at the BEI Main Hall, Jakarta, Monday (10/6/2026). Thus, investors wishing to buy gold ETFs can access them through investment platforms that provide securities trading. Gold ETF transactions follow BEI trading hours, so investors can buy and sell them while the market is open.
