TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Minister of Creative Economy Irene Umar is pushing for stronger international payment connectivity through QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard). This would give Indonesian creative economy practitioners wider access to payments from the global market.

Irene said that the ministry is strengthening its collaboration with Bank Indonesia to facilitate payment connectivity for creative economy practitioners abroad. This is important for developing a globally oriented creative economy ecosystem.

“Not only through the internet, not only when we reach out and search for existing customers, but also the cash flow will be conducted through Bank Indonesia so that the payments can flow,” said Irene at the FEKDI x IFSE 2026 event in Jakarta on Saturday, September 26, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Irene said Indonesian creative economy practitioners are targeting not only domestic consumers but also consumers in various other countries.

She mentioned that some countries, such as Japan, America, and other developing countries, are quite fond of Indonesian goods. However, several challenges still limit creative economy practitioners selling abroad. One example is limited access to bank accounts and payment acceptance mechanisms in the destination country.

“When we go to Japan, America, and other developing countries, they really like products from Indonesia. But our friends who sell there cannot open a bank account and it is very difficult to receive payment,” said Irene.

She believes connectivity in the creative economy is not just through the internet to connect businesses with consumers in various countries. Facilitating payments more easily is also needed so that transactions can be followed by a smoother flow of funds.

According to Irene, strengthening the payment system can help creative economy practitioners expand their business reach to the international market. One example is when QRIS was introduced during the promotion of Indonesian creative economy products abroad, when the Ministry of Creative Economy brought more than 100 brands and over 20 creative economy subsectors to Singapore.

In this event, transactions for Indonesian products relied not only on credit cards but also on QRIS. She said strengthening digital payment connectivity is part of the supporting infrastructure necessary for Indonesia’s creative economy to expand its market and facilitate domestic and international transactions.
